First Day Exploring in Berlin

First Day Exploring in Berlin

Got off from the airplane, transferring from bus to train, towing my luggage to the apartment, I was the only one wearing the long boots on the street in 90° F (30° C). Most people say English is pretty common here but I don't think I can live here without learning basic German. In the supermarket, the clerk said the amount of money in German sincerely over and over again. Sorry I really can't understand... Don't get me wrong; I was not complaining. I already love here! So many lovely coffee shops and beer garden around my place. (Honestly, I started to drink coffee and beer from this year so I can't really tell you how good it is.)

I run into this hindered coffee shop this afternoon because I need some caffeine after a short nap. Surprisingly, the staff here speaks good English. Then he said he's from England. He moved to Berlin earlier this year because it's cheaper to make music here. Before, they had to travel to an affordable studio to rehearse. Now they focus on making new music and will have tour sometimes. Check out the music here>>>  https://soundcloud.com/esben-and-the-witch

It suddenly rained in the late afternoon and became cooler. It seems the temperature will drop dramatically this week so it's better to bring jacket with you all the time even though it's hot and humid in the day time.

Spice Garden - weekend morning freshness

Saturday morning, woke up at 8 and wondered how I could started my wonderful weekend. I decided to go to Trader Joe's for my salad ingredient. Pulling the cart with the free coffee they served, I was looking at those fresh vegetable and thinking why not preparing a nice meal for myself. So I carried two full bags of vegetable and fruits for my new improvisation.

It took me two hours from preparing to serve on the table (plus tons of time on arranging and photoshooting). Of course dessert is a must for weekend indulgence.

The sour apple sauce is the leftover of apple pie I made few days ago. I'll post the recipe and process if I make the second round. (The previous pie crust is a failure because I didn't follow the recipe haha)

Most of the time I have salad as my meal because it's easy, healthy, low-calories and quick! I like to change the ingredient to surprise myself. Few weeks ago I really liked to add mint into my salad.

If you're worried about the calories from salad dressing, I would recommend greek yogurt! I think I love greek yogurt too much that I have it almost EVERYDAY! ;-)

To my father

In Taiwan, Father's Day is at Aug 8. Two years ago today, I jumped on the airplane coming to the US and haven't had chance celebrating Father's Day since then. Before leaving my home, I left my handmade leather bag at my father's room.

This year, I decided to make a photobook which allows me to make it in the US and get it printed and shipped in Taiwan.

Of course it's all written in Chinese. You'll find something interesting if you can read it.... (ugh...my secret...)

Overall it's around 80 pages. It took me a month to select photos (from I was born), design the layout, edit the content, make it more interesting... Originally my idea was making a "design magazine-ish" photobook (B&W, aloof, blur or shadows...) but that doesn't really fit the vibe of my family. I do miss my family and all the memory while I was working on this...

Anyway
Thank you for supporting me, dad! You're awesome! ;-)

Bali Indonesia - Temples / Monkeys / Beaches

I went to Bali island with other Art Center students who went to the same exchange program in Singapore with me. It was a wonderful 3-day trip wandering on the beautiful beach, swimming in the warm and blue ocean, riding scooters on intertwining and winding roads, enjoying the authentic Indonesian food, visiting historic temples...

Bali is also the place well known for surfing and diving. I don't surf but my friend did enjoy surfing there (south Kuta). There's a shipwreck close to Bali but I haven't got diving license at that time.

Tons of monkeys here... they are very aggressive! Better watch out your glasses because I witnessed a guy was attacked by a monkey and the glasses was stolen!

Below are some selected full-size photos I took in the national park.

Ridge lake

Unfortunately, there was no fireworks at the place we stayed, Red Bluff. No hot dog was found either. We had hamburgers in an old American style restaurant as an embodiment of American spirit.

Next day is also the last day of the trip. No strenuous activity is planned before the day of going back to work.

Sonoma is a really cute place. Not many photos were taken because I was buzzed. Normally I don't drink but wine tasting here is free or very cheap.
I also highly recommend the Figone's virgin olive oil and balsamic oil! I'm huge fan of salad but I used to use cheapest salad dressing in super markets or greek yogurt. After tasting Figone's olive oil, I can't go back to the cheap dressing. It totally blew my mind! Here's the photo of my dinner with Figone's:

It's very expensive for an intern student. But it makes me more happy while having dinner :-)

PRIDE - #LOVEWINS

Jun 26 Fri US Supreme Court announced the legalization of gay marriage on all 50 states.

It happened that SF PRIDE parade was at the following weekend! If you don't know what PRIDE parade is, check out the website: SF PRIDE

"celebrating self, celebrating diversity, standing against LGBT discrimination, speaking out for one’s ideals, honoring LGBT history, recognizing friends and allies, or standing for a loved one lost."
pride 1

It was my first time joining LGBT event. I can't think of any similar activity in Taiwan.

pride2

It was HUGE! There were several stages with musical performance around civic center. Lots of people dressing colorful and crazy wandering or dancing on the street. I was dancing all day too ;-p

pride 3

Almost everyone I know living in the SF city joined this event.
